April 2009- The Financial Times, Hewlett Packard and Forum for the Future collaborated to award $75,000 for the FT Climate Change Challenge. The winner was the Kyoto Box, which uses the sun’s rays to cook food and boil water. It is targeted at the 3bn people who currently use firewood. The box costs just $5 (£3.40) to make and will be given away free.
The FT Climate Change Challenge wants to find ideas that are below the radar – being developed by think-tanks, academic institutions or individual entrepreneurs – and identify those that can be taken to scale quickly and make a real difference. They are scouring the world for the most exciting low-carbon ideas. These could be new technologies, systems or services, novel organizations or business models.
